Feeling abandoned in Iguala, Reyna was left in the care of relatives who were often cruel. Later, when Grande was five, her mother also left to join her husband in California. When Grande was barely a year old, her father crossed the border to “El Otro Lado” (The other side) to find a way to earn money to send back to his family in desperately impoverished Iguala, Guerrero. Her life story is a fascinating one, not only because of her willingness to be absolutely frank about her feelings and perceptions but for the impact the immigration experience has had on generations of families and the family structure. ![]() ![]() ![]() Reyna Grande shares her experiences as an undocumented immigrant from Mexico who, at age nine, accompanied by young siblings and a coyote, succeeded on her third attempt to cross the border near Tijuana. ![]() ![]() ![]() Though Mary played an important part in the anti-slavery campaign of the 1830s, she was not looked upon as a campaigner in her own right. Prince's account was also used by Thomas Pringle, the leader of the Anti-Slavery Society, to put pressure on Parliament. It particularly appealed to female anti-slavery campaigners as it highlighted the effect of slavery upon domestic life: the break up of families, the absence of 'normal' married life, the sexual oppression and the humiliation endured by female slaves. The autobiography had a tremendous impact, published when the campaign to support the slavery still continuing in the Americas and the Caribbean was at its height. It is possible that Strickland may have edited out some details to make Mary seem more 'respectable'. Strickland was careful to write Mary's story in Standard English and to arrange it to make it acceptable to the British public. She narrated her life story to the author Susannah Strickland. Unsure of her legal status, she decided to go public with her experiences as a slave. After years of mistreatment she tried unsuccessfully to gain her freedom, first through the courts and then via a petition to Parliament. ![]() Mary Prince was born on Barbados but was brought to London in the 1820s by her owners, the Woods. ![]() This is the only known autobiographical account, published in 1831, of a female slave from the British West Indies. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The children soon make friends with the inhabitants of the tree including, Saucepan Man, Silky the fairy, and Moon-Face. Somehow, I thought this book would steer away from Preston’s usual genre of thrillers and mysteries. Usually, the idea of spending time with close friends after a stressful year of school is an exhilarating one, and the adventurous trip of a group of friends is what I thought I would be reading about when I first laid my eyes on the book The Cabin by Natasha Preston. The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of going on a trip to a lake with my friends is how much fun we will all have together. ![]() ![]() However, nothing it seems can diminish Isabel's innate curiosity. But from that story, Moebius would spend nearly the next 20 years struggling against his own desired freedom and the world’s pressure to categorize, normalize, quantify and regulate his creative impulses and desires. “Repairs” is very much a Moebius story of its time- a freewheeling exploration of imagery and themes that displayed Moebius’ 1970-ish creative freedom. Starting with the short story “Repairs,” Moebius discovers Stel and Atan, two very plain and non-sexual repairmen who have to fix the fantastic machines of the future. Moebius is maybe one of the only cartoonists who could take a paying gig for a company like Citreon and turn it into the opening chapter of a cycle of stories about how the late 20th century humanity has disconnected itself from everything pure and good that came before. Back in the early 1980s, Moebius discovered the tiniest gem of a much larger story in a comic that was basically a promotional comic for French car salesmen. The World of Edena, the first volume in Dark Horse's Moebius Library, is part adventure and part spiritual. ![]() ![]() ![]() Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
